Bastet

external image bastet.gifBastet, the goddess, was a woman with the head of a cat. She was thought to have a gray cat head and some blue hair that ran just past her shoulder. Bastet wore a thick, golden neckline that ran down to an ankle- length, green dress. The goddess's skin was a light yellowish color and she had brownish, black fingers. Bastet went barefoot and appeared to have no toes.

Bastet was the goddess of fire, cats, and of the home. She was known as the "Lady of the East" as well as Bast and Bastet. Some of the symbols that Bast had were the cat and lioness. Bastet was also the daughter of Re. She was said to have 2 sides. The goddess was caring when doing her duties as the protector of the home. Bast could get violent, though, when she was in a war. In that time people thought that the pharaoh would kill his enemies just like Bast killed her enemies. Bastet was usually described as happy and kind, bringing good fortune, music, dance, and joy to all Egyptians that were on her "good side" . She matched the cat family in the way she moved, her strength, caution, and pride. She became equal with Sekhmet, the lioness goddess external image E099BP2.jpgof war, during the New Kingdom. Also, the cat was thought of as her sacred animal. This is probably because one of her special items was a basket that almost always had kittens in it.

If I was told to design Bastet's temple I would make the temple be in the shape of a rectangle with an entryway that sticks out. The entry way walls and floor would be made of marble. At the front of the entryway, there would be the door that allowed you to enter this special place of worship. When you enter the temple, you will be in lots of sunlight because the temple has huge windows that allow in light so you can see all of the things that are in the temple. As you made your way down the long passageway, you would see hundreds of paintings of Bastet and cats. On your way down the hall, you would also see little gold and and bronze statues of Bast and cats spaced evenly apart. When you reach the rectangle, you have a choice of 4 doors to choose from, all the rooms are the same, but only one family is allowed in one room at a time. When you enter one of the four rooms, you will see that it is made of wood, instead of marble. The floor has beautifully colored rugs on it. On the walls are colorful murals explaining the life of Bastet and her cats. At the end of the room is a huge statue of Bastet, that is spaced between the two massive windows. In front of that is an offering plate for you to put your offering of food or drink. That is what Bastet's temple would look like if I was designing it.
